DesignWorlds has special expertise in developing innovative, collaborative projects and user communities around new, emerging technologies and learning strategies, such as: digital video, the Web, early childhood and teen learning/entertainment, Project-Based Learning (PBL) and distance learning. Moreover, DesignWorlds understands the needs of educators, students, and families and distribution channels that serve them.
ROCKMAN et cetera was established to undertake operational programs in education for both formal and informal learning, and to collaborate on educational research, develop research-based policy papers, and create learning resources. While the for-profit, ROCKMAN ET AL, has focused on research and evaluation, ROCKMAN et cetera is designed to take on product development, programmatic initiatives, and operational efforts that are not within the scope of the for-profit company.

ROCKMAN et cetera receives funding from foundations and state and federal programs that will only fund not-for-profit entities such as the Chicago Public Schools funded by the Joyce Foundation, Supporting Our Sons, Math-Science Network, and the The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
